The position is located in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General (OUSG), Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
The incumbent reports to the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs.

Under the general supervision of the USG, the incumbent assists the USG in the overall direction and management of the Department by:
- directing and managing the activities of the Office of the Under-Secretary-General;
- monitoring all the Department’s activities; - liaising with all organizational units within the Department to ensure smooth and efficient functioning; - advancing on the planning, coordination and assessment of DESA’s work programme; - advising on Departmental policy on programme and management issues including ongoing efficiency exercises; evaluation; capacity development; - interacting with other Departments, Funds and Programme to increase coordination and consultation; - advising on intergovernmental processes and interacting with Governments; - liaising with task forces and groups established by the Under-Secretary-General.
